Luna Sculpture - Size Comparison and video link by bigponymac Luna Sculpture - Size Comparison and video link by bigponymac
I've been getting questions about how big this sculpture is compared to me. I finally got around to taking a picture of me beside it. I stand at six feet tall. The sculpture stands at close to three feet.

I also decided to make a video about this project where I answer some common and specially requested questions. I rambled on for almost thirty minutes but there should be some good information in there for those of you that are interested.

You can find that video here: [link]

Very nice! you are quite the artist. I would be terrified making a hollow piece. you look pretty hot yourself.

Making it hollow wasn't that scary at all because I built it up a little at a time. I also built internal supports to prevent it from caving in on itself.

And thanks! lol

Thank you!

The key to proportions is to have a good reference to go by and by checking your proportions frequently as you go along. For this sculpture I sketched out a concept then established a unit of measurement. Mine was the length of one hoof. From there I made scale measurements on the sketch and applied them to the sculpture.

Interesting. You know, I too have been thinking about how the MLP ponies would be sized on a human scale. I personally found it easier to compare their size and stature with that of dogs.

-For the smaller, younger ponies like Apple Blossom, I figured they'd be the same size as a Jack Russel Terrier, which stands between 10-15 inches at the withers.

-For most of the standard ponies like Pinkie Pie, I figured their size would compare with most medium-large dog breeds, like maybe the Siberian Husky.

-For the taller ponies like Celestia, I was thinking they'd be slightly taller than most Great Danes or Irish Wolfhounds.

Makes sense. Here's how I like to think of them. I stand at 6 feet tall. I would like to think that the Princesses would be almost as tall as me, if not as tall. So they would be about 5-6 feet (to the top of their head, not their horns), normal ponies would be somewhere around 3 feet (the males may be taller), and the fillies and colts would be 2 feet and smaller.

So actually that's very close to the same as your comparisons, but that's how I always visualized them. And if we take both our pony sizes into account, this sculpture would be about 1/2 scale. If I would have done a normal pony, it would have been about full scale.

Now I kind of wish I would have done a normal one so I could declare it "FULL SCALE". lol

I don't worry too much about the votes. The only thing I look at is if anyone actually enjoys my work. If there are people out there that like my work then I must be doing something right.

Thank you!

She is beautiful. Great attention to detail, the proportions look accurate, and the shapes are all smooth and seamless. I can't wait to see what she looks like, finished. Do you plan to paint her, too?

And, haters are unhappy with themselves, so they have to take it out on others to feel good. ALL artwork that is not paid for by someone else is a product of the creator's love for the subject! Keep on loving, brother! No matter what it is you choose to love.

I originally planned on painting her, but I'm having second thoughts now. I sort of want to keep the look natural now.

Thank you for the kind words. I really do appreciate them and you just gave me a new favorite quote. :)

Part of me is indeed hoping she'll stay clay-coloured. Painting her with strong colours could overwhelm her beautiful form. <3

I think I've decided that I'm going to leave it natural. If I add any color, it's going to be very subtle or I'll try to go for a distressed look. But that's a big "if".
