Finished sooner than expected and glad. If I would have had to on work on it longer, the clay might have gotten too dry to make any changes to it. The only thing I can do to a sculpture if the clay gets to hard and dry is subtract from it. There would be no way to add anything to it. It was already getting too hard so I made it a point today to get this thing done.

All that's left is to let it dry out completely, bisque fire it, possibly stain and/or glaze it, then fire it again. Though I'm thinking about skipping the staining/glazing part and painting this after the second fire.

My teacher doesn't fire anything until he can fill the kiln up so I don't know when this piece will be completely finished. I've been waiting on Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash since April and they are still sitting in the kiln room awaiting their final trip through the fire.

Expect a lot more sculptures this time around. I'm on a roll with ideas. Next up will be a Celestia and Luna sculpture. With a little inspiration from the fanfic Past Sins. I'll post some of my concept sketches when I get them scanned in.

The three views balance nicely now, and I think it's neat how NMM's hoof "is trying to get in front of Luna's wing" here. ;) The moon looks much better now too, an I guess that the scoring for her eye stays put after all. I'm assuming that you can still fix that bubble near where Luna's mane meets the front of her neck. Still too bad Princess Luna's horn didn't quite make the cut, but I know there are size limits to consider.

As I zoom in (and pay more attention) I see that the clay is "grainy" with lots of different particulates in it, almost the clay version of concrete. What are the pros and cons between that type of clay and Sculpey? As I see more and more sculpture I'm just getting more curious I guess. :)

The concepts are a lot of fun, and the Pinkie Pie is a very sweet thought, and I hope the new Dash idea turns into something breathtaking. The epic "mares with weapons" sounds like it could be a lot of fun despite the grim vibe I get whenever others discuss the story (even apart from that picture :o).

Heck, it may be time to create a dA group solely for Friendship is Magic sculpture and 3D.

Snap I didn't even notice that bubble. :O I should be able to shave it down and make it even. That'll be first priority when I go to class this morning.

The type clay I'm using is called Orangestone and according to my teacher it's the strongest of the clays that are available at our bookstore. It's due to the high grain content and that makes it very durable which makes it possible to do more stuff with it.

I've always wanted to do a sculpture that showed a lot of action and motion. Before I came up with the Dash idea, I had originally wanted to do that with the Celestia and Luna sculptures. Maybe have them galloping with the swords dragging the ground kicking up dirt, but after researching how horses run, that would have been very difficult to pull off without proper planning (which I haven't got a chance to do).

I actually had an even more grim idea for Celestia and Luna, but the sculpture would have been huge after I got done with it. I had wanted to do a scene with them right after a battle. Celestia's laying down with cuts and scrapes, one of her wings is matted up, and Luna's walking up to her to comfort her or something. It would have been a complete scene with background elements.

And you may be right about that group. ;)

The first ideas sound fantastic, especially if you also included the dust storms left by the weapons cutting into the earth. Yeah, my mind likes to jump ahead like that. =p The post-battle idea sounds very touching but probably would have bothered a lot of people too. (On the bright side, it would start an avalanche of CEvilestia stories where Luna wins in the end.)

Though #PoniesPlus has a great Pony related creations section for sculptures, there could be enough sculptors and CGI artists (et cetera) someday that could use a place to rant about the trickiness discuss the nuances of the designs and share techniques. I only know of four so far, and you're the only one who's been particularly pronylific. ;)

Good Lord! That is one of the most beautiful sculpture/clay tile thing I have ever seen. Well I haven't seen many but still this is still so perfect! And it has the best pony on it as well.
