Technically this is day 2. The first day I made a huge hollow tube about 15 inches tall and let it sit over the weekend. Today I carved out the neck. Sort of going with a subtractive method rather than and additive method like I'm used to.

The reason I'm doing it this way is because I need something to support the sculpture while I'm working on it. Last time I carved out the base and everything before it was dry enough and it all sagged and dropped on me. I'm also going to need that bottom support when it's time to fire it because I can't put the base I'm going to construct in the kiln.

I used really close to 50lbs of clay just to start out. Also note that that thing is hollow. The walls are pretty thick though. Probably about 2in at least at the base. I cut away about 15lbs when I carved out the neck (that big block that's sitting to the side). I'm probably going to use that clay to make the head.

It's held up quite well despite the fact that I'm having to make some repairs to it. My teacher and I were wiring it off the piece of wood it's standing on and the front left leg fell off. lol

It came apart where I had previously had to wire it off and put it back together. Evidently I didn't do a good enough job of scoring and slipping when I fixed it. Also back left leg shifted while we were wiring it of the base and it cracked just above the hock (the ankle if you will). That means I'm going to have to wire it off and put it back together.

It all good though. I'm glad it happened now instead of it happening later when I've got a bunch of details on it or it happening during the firing process. *shudders at the latter thought*

yeah I know what you mean, wires are important to a good clay structure's durability...

I think it would be a very economic approach....
